ALEX VOYTENKO is a composer, musicologist, and senior lecturer in the music theory department of the National Music Academy of Ukraine, Kyiv.
Voytenko is primarily an autodidact. He graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (1998–2002) before attending the National Music Academy of Ukraine (2002–2007) in the composition class of Professor Yuri Ishchenko. From 2007–2010, he was a Ph.D. student in the music theory department of the National Music Academy of Ukraine under the supervision of Bogdan Syuta and he defended his thesis in 2012. He is a member of the National Composers Union of Ukraine.
Voytenko’s main scholarly interests are the ontology of music, history of music theory, theory of orchestration, theory of serial composition, history of the “Kyiv avant-garde” group, Volodymyr Zahortsev’s (1944–2010) oeuvre, and Nikolai Myaskovsky’s (1881–1950) work.In 2021, he published a book In Memoriam. Voytenko’s major compositions include Book for 4 strings, The Music of Erich Zann (2004–2018) after Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s short story,`«Tempus fugit…» (2007, rev. 2013) for piano and symph. orchestra, «Пαράβασις» (rev. 2016) for vn, vc, pno, str. orchestra, «The Possibility of an Island» for piano and string orchestra, and "Classical Symphony" for small symphony orchestra. In 4 movements (rev. 2020), as well as a number of articles addressing various problems of modern and classical music.
He is recipient of Levko Revutskyi Prize of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine (2014), Diploma of Composers competition in memory of Dmitri Shostakovich, Saint Petersburg (2006), and World Wagner Society stipendium (2004).
