Julia Biber

Dr. Julia Biber has performed throughout the world as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. In September, 2016, she earned her Doctoral degree from the CUNY Graduate Center. Julia is an active recitalist and chamber musician and has been heard in various venues and concert series including The Metropolitan Museum, Carnegie Hall, New York Cello Society, Music in Midtown, Hunter College, Con Vivo, Barbes, Joe’s Pub and many others. She is a regular substitute with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra as well as the Westchester and New Haven Symphony as well as a regular face on the Broadway circuit.

Julia is the cellist of the early music ensemble, the Elixir Quartet, a group committed to performing the great string quartet repertoire on period instruments.  She received her Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Richard Aaron and her Bachelor of Music degree from the Mannes College of Music as a student of Barbara Stein Mallow. Other influential teachers include, Julia Lichten, Marcy Rosen and the Brentano and Borromeo Quartets. Festival attendance include Tanglewood, Kneisel Hall, Taos, and Pikes Falls Chamber music festivals.

Julia is the founder and curator of the Brooklyn-based chamber music series, ‘Branded Classical’ (formerly ‘Classical at Pete’s) which brings world class chamber music to the back room of Branded Saloon, a local watering hole in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. The series aims to provide great music in a relaxed atmosphere while providing a space for ensembles and composers to experiment and take risks among a dedicated and supportive local audience.

As a dedicated teacher, Julia received her Suzuki Certification under the tutelage of master teacher, Tanya Carey with additional studies at School for Strings in NYC. She currently serves on the cello faculty at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College where she teaches cello and chamber music and at Hunter College where she teaches music history.

Julia is also active in the folk and rock world. She has been heard at Joe’s Pub, National Sawdust, City Winery, The Living Room, Rockwood Music Hall, Le Poisson Rouge among many others. A regular studio musician, Julia has played on numerous albums of bands and singer/songwriters. She has been heard on WFUV, WNYC’s Soundcheck and WUMB.
